Independent Media Association in the Making

Filed under: Press — jeyoung at 3:35 pm on Thursday, August 10, 2006

Christina Meetoo tells about her participation in a live radio show with journalists Sedley Assonne and Henri Marimootoo, recalling her suggestion for the creation of an press association that would be independent from the government and the dying Media Trust — the Prime Minister has not yet appointed a chairman several months after media representatives were elected. The hearsay she concludes with, that this is in the making, just proved right.

In today’s L’Express, we learn that yesterday a meeting to discuss the proposal for an association of journalists attracted 67 of them. The proposal, put forward by Nad Sivaramen and Sedley Assonne, both of whom have now resigned from the Media Trust, was received positively. A core group of 18 journalists has been designated to initiate the project which is expected to give media professionals in Mauritius self-regulation and a place to for them to interact.
