Week-End Scope Joke Corner

Filed under: Press — Kapil at 5:02 am on Thursday, August 31, 2006

In WES: “Friendship: Shakeel sends an SMS to Shawn : Breakin news : Police found a dead body with a monkey’s face. SMS me back if you are ok. I’m worried!”

I never get their jokes. It is very often lame. Is it me or their jokes suck?

Finds in L’Express Outlook

Two finds in l’Express worthy of mention here:

L’Express Outlook reports the upcoming Masturbate-a-thon — yes, that exists — due to take place in Clerkenwell, London, this week-end. I commute through Clerkenwell everyday, and was naturally intrigued. But, I am also curious what made the editors think that the event would interest the majority of its readers, who are based more than 6000 miles from the venue.

The other find is the piece about an Iraqi woman’s blog adapted into a play that is to be presented at the Ediburgh Fringe Arts Festival. In the past, we have seen Belle de Jour, the blog-diary of a London call-girl, turned into a successful book deal. The obvious question that comes to mind is, how long before a movie that is inspired from a blog? Or, has it been done already?

Independent Media Association in the Making

Filed under: Press — jeyoung at 3:35 pm on Thursday, August 10, 2006

Christina Meetoo tells about her participation in a live radio show with journalists Sedley Assonne and Henri Marimootoo, recalling her suggestion for the creation of an press association that would be independent from the government and the dying Media Trust — the Prime Minister has not yet appointed a chairman several months after media representatives were elected. The hearsay she concludes with, that this is in the making, just proved right.

In today’s L’Express, we learn that yesterday a meeting to discuss the proposal for an association of journalists attracted 67 of them. The proposal, put forward by Nad Sivaramen and Sedley Assonne, both of whom have now resigned from the Media Trust, was received positively. A core group of 18 journalists has been designated to initiate the project which is expected to give media professionals in Mauritius self-regulation and a place to for them to interact.
